The Platinum Card® is designed for frequent travelers and people who can maximize its many lifestyle credits, broad lounge access, and high-end travel benefits. However, the steep annual fee and complex list of benefits might not make sense if you prefer a simpler rewards card.

In this Amex Platinum review, we break down the card’s rewards, benefits, and fees, as well as if it’s worth the steep annual fee.

  • Best for: Travelers who can maximize multiple statement credits and premium travel perks
  • Main benefit: Premium lounge access and a long list of credits that can help offset the annual fee
  • Biggest downside: Extremely high annual fee and many credits require enrollment or ongoing effort to use fully

  • Numerous annual statement credits that can offset part of the annual fee
  • Premium travel protections and purchase protections
  • Strong transfer partner network for airline redemptions

  • Low rewards rate on everyday spending outside travel categories

Platinum Card® rewards

The Platinum Card earns Membership Rewards points, not cash back. You earn 5X points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines or through American Express Travel, up to $500,000 in purchases per year. You’ll also earn 5X points per dollar on prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel, which includes the curated Select Homes + Retreats collection of short-term rentals in the U.S.

All other purchases earn 1X point per dollar, and there are no spending caps on these base earnings. That means the card works best when used for travel purchases rather than everyday spending.

Membership Rewards points can be redeemed for travel through American Express Travel, statement credits, gift cards, or transferred to airline and hotel loyalty programs. In many cases, transferring points to airline partners can provide the highest value. Most airline transfer partners convert points at a 1:1 ratio.

American Express has one of the largest transfer partner networks among credit card issuers. Membership Rewards points can be transferred to 20 airline and hotel programs, including partners like Delta SkyMiles, Air Canada Aeroplan, The British Airways Club, and Hilton Honors.

Cardholders can also access Amex Offers, which provide statement credits or bonus points for spending with participating merchants.

Keep in mind

The Amex Platinum rewards spending on airfare far more than everyday purchases, which means the biggest value comes when you regularly book flights or prepaid hotels. If most of your spending falls outside travel, you might earn rewards more slowly than with cards that offer strong, everyday bonus categories.

American Express Platinum Card® welcome bonus

American Express doesn’t always advertise a single universal welcome offer for the Amex Platinum Card. Instead, the issuer often uses a “apply to see your offer” model, meaning the exact bonus can vary by applicant and depends on approval. Currently, offers can reach up to 175,000 Membership Rewards points after meeting a required spending threshold within the first several months of account opening.

Membership Rewards points are often valued at roughly one to two cents per point, depending on how they’re redeemed. That means a welcome bonus could potentially be worth $1,750 to $3,500 in travel value if you maximize redemptions through airline transfer partners.

Compared with other ultrapremium travel cards, the Platinum Card’s welcome bonus can be one of the largest available — though the exact offer you receive will depend on your application.

Fees and interest rates

The Amex Platinum annual fee is now $895, making it one of the most expensive consumer travel cards. However, the list of credits and benefits can offset a large portion of that cost if you use them regularly.

Like most premium travel cards, the Platinum Card carries a high APR, so it’s best suited for people who pay their balance in full each month.

  • Annual fee: $895 (not waived the first year)
  • Authorized user fee: $195 per user (additional Platinum Card holders also receive many of the same lounge access benefits)
  • Purchase APR: 19.49% to 28.49% variable APR, based on your creditworthiness
  • Balance transfer APR: Not typically offered
  • Balance transfer fee: Not applicable
  • Foreign transaction fees: None
  • Late payment fee: Up to $40

The Platinum Card doesn’t have a traditional preset spending limit, though purchases are approved based on factors such as spending history and credit profile.

Platinum Card® benefits and perks

The Platinum Card is known for its variety of travel perks and statement credits. For frequent travelers, these benefits can deliver meaningful value throughout the year.

Standout benefits include:

  • Resy dining credit: Up to $400 per calendar year (enrollment required), issued as up to $100 per quarter on eligible Resy restaurant purchases. Platinum Card members also receive access to special dining reservations through Platinum Nights by Resy, which offers limited in-restaurant reservations on select nights in certain cities.

  • Lounge access: Access more than 1,550 lounges worldwide through the American Express Global Lounge Collection. This includes Centurion Lounges, Escape Lounges – The Centurion Studio Partner, Priority Pass Select lounges (note that restaurant credits aren’t included and enrollment is required), select Lufthansa lounges when flying Lufthansa Group airlines, and up to 10 Delta Sky Club visits per year when flying Delta.
  • Premium hotel status: Get complimentary elite hotel status with Hilton Honors Gold, Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite, and Leaders Club Sterling from The Leading Hotels of the World.
  • Airline fee credit: Receive up to $200 in annual statement credits for incidental airline fees with a selected qualifying airline.

While the list of benefits is extensive, the real value comes from the credits and lounge access. Many of the other perks are useful but are only beneficial if they already fit your existing travel habits.

Expert tip

Many of the Platinum Card’s statement credits require enrollment and specific purchase types. Setting calendar reminders for quarterly or monthly credits can help ensure that you don’t forget to use them.

Travel and purchase protections

The American Express Platinum Card also includes several travel and purchase protections when you use the card for eligible transactions. These benefits can provide financial protection if something goes wrong during your travels or after you buy an item.

Key protections include:

  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance: Coverage can reimburse nonrefundable travel expenses if a trip is canceled or cut short due to covered reasons.
  • Trip delay insurance: If your flight is delayed for a certain number of hours, the card will reimburse eligible expenses, such as meals, lodging, and transportation.
  • Baggage insurance: Lost, damaged, or stolen luggage is covered when you pay for your trip with the card.
  • Rental car loss and damage insurance: This secondary coverage applies when you decline the rental company’s collision damage waiver and pay for the rental with the card.
  • Global Assist Hotline: Cardholders can access 24/7 emergency assistance services when traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Cellphone protection: When you pay your monthly wireless bill with the card, eligible phones are covered against damage or theft, subject to limits and a $50 deductible.
  • Purchase protection: Eligible purchases are covered against damage, loss, or theft for a limited time after purchase.
  • Extended warranty: Eligible purchases can receive additional warranty coverage beyond the manufacturer’s warranty.
  • Return protection: If a merchant won’t accept a return within a certain timeframe, American Express will reimburse the purchase amount, subject to limits.

While these protections can be valuable, the exact coverage limits and eligibility requirements vary. You’ll want to review the card’s benefit guide for full details before relying on them.

Who is it best for?

Best for: Frequent travelers who can maximize travel perks and statement credits

The Amex Platinum Card makes the most sense if you can consistently use several of its statement credits and travel perks throughout the year. If you already spend heavily on flights and hotels, the 5X earning rate can also add significant value.

In general, this card can be a good fit for people who are comfortable managing multiple credits and benefits throughout the year to offset the annual fee.

Who should skip this card?

If you prefer a simple rewards card with straightforward cash back or bonus categories, the Platinum Card might feel overly complicated — especially since many of its perks require enrollment or specific booking channels.

You might also want to skip this card if most of your spending happens on everyday categories like groceries or dining, since the base earning rate is relatively low outside travel purchases.

How it compares to other cards

The Platinum Card sits in the ultrapremium travel card category, but it isn’t the only option. Here’s how it compares with two other popular premium travel cards:

How to apply for the Platinum Card®

You can apply for the American Express Platinum Card directly through the American Express website. Applicants typically need good to excellent credit and sufficient income to support the credit line. American Express will review your credit profile and financial history when making an approval decision.

Before applying, consider whether you’ll realistically use the card’s statement credits and travel benefits. Because of the high annual fee, the card tends to make the most sense if you plan to take advantage of its perks regularly to offset the cost.
