Personal finance FAQs

Whether it’s a good idea to consolidate debt or not depends on your circumstances. For example, consolidating debt can be worth it if you could save a substantial amount on interest — like if you consolidate high-interest credit card debt with a more budget-friendly personal loan. Simplifying your finances with one, potentially lower, monthly payment could also be worth the extra effort upfront.

However, debt consolidation likely isn't worth it if you won’t qualify for a lower interest rate, the fees are too high, or you’re likely to go further into debt after paying off your balances. In these situations, you might consider making extra payments to pay off your accounts early instead.

An emergency fund is money you’ve specifically set aside for unexpected or sudden expenses. This cash can be stored in a savings account, but it isn’t just general savings. It’s a specific type of cash reserve you use only in emergencies.

A savings account is simply a place for money you’ve set aside. It can hold an emergency fund, but the money you store there could also be used for other purposes, like a vacation, new furniture, or retirement.

This depends on your finances and goals. If you have good credit, need only a small amount, and don’t want to put an asset at risk, an unsecured loan can be a smart idea. On the other hand, if you need to borrow a large amount, want a lower rate, and prefer an extended repayment period, then a secured loan might be a better fit.

The easiest side hustles are the ones that require little to no experience and can be started quickly. Selling items you already own, pet sitting, delivery work, and basic cleaning jobs are some of the most accessible options for beginners.
